Mini Transport/Platform Bed

Client need
A student living with Cerebral Palsy, seizures, and non-ambulatory mobility needed a way to lay comfortably in side-lying position at school while staying at eye level with classmates during lessons.
A standard hospital bed or stretcher was too large for the classroom, and the family and school team needed a smaller, custom-built alternative that also made day-to-day nursing care easier.
What was built
Our volunteers designed and built a custom, classroom-sized platform bed (approx. 56"×30"×30") from solid wood, sized to fit where a full hospital bed couldn't. It features a padded, vinyl-covered mattress with clear acrylic side rails for safety, a stainless steel push handle for easy repositioning, and swivel-locking casters so it can move between rooms and lock securely in place.
The design also leaves room for the equipment the student uses throughout the day — a mounting area for an eye-gaze communication device, and space underneath for a feeding pump, suction, and oxygen equipment.
How it helped
The bed lets the student join lessons at eye level with their peers instead of being set apart at floor height, while giving school nursing staff a safer, more convenient setup for care throughout the day — all in a footprint that actually fits in the classroom.
