Safe and Secure Bed

Client need
A safe and structurally secure bed was needed. The young 9 year old client had broken a crib style bed previously through shaking and rocking it. The child had a genetic condition which resulted in difficult behaviours and impaired mobility. The family felt that she would climb out of a typical high-sided bed and/or would break a soft-paneled (e.g. zipper closure) bed. They needed swing away or latch doors and smooth surfaces to discourage climbing.
What was built
Our volunteer built a tall upper bed enclosure on the existing metal bed frame with very strong fasteners/hardware. Salvaged oak church pews were used for the slats. Smooth prefinished birch plywood was used for the back. The front had 2 swinging doors for ease of transfer and bedding changes. The enclosure was taller than she could climb!
How it helped
She was able to sleep safely in the bed in a firm, secure bed which could not be moved. The family also slept better with peace of mind knowing that the child could not climb out and get into a risky situation. The design allowed easier transfers and bedding maintenance.
